The Ebro Delta lies in the south
of the province of Tarragona, where the river Ebro
flows into the Mediterranean. Covering an area of
320 square kilometres, it is the second largest
wetland area in the western Mediterranean. It includes
widely-varying habitats with large salt-water lagoons
such as La Tancada or freshwater lagoons such as
L’Encanyissada next to kilometres of beaches,
fields and sand dunes. Also to be found are riverside
woods and river islands. Together with the rice
fields, these make up a unique landscape of exceptional
natural richness.
Because of the wide diversity of ecosystems in the
Delta, it was declared a natural park in 1983. Its
wildlife alone is of considerable interest: between
sedentary and migratory birds, there are over 300
species. Of particular interest among these are
flamingos, pintails, Audouin's gulls and terns (sandwich
terns, common terns and little terns).
